Citing court documents, Reuters reported that the former head of Greece’s intelligence agency told judges that the agency did not use illegal phone malware to spy on targets between 2019 and 2022.
The surveillance scandal broke in August 2022, when it was revealed that the government had tapped the phone of opposition Socialist Faction leader Nikos Androulakis. Investigative journalists, civil rights groups and Greek telecoms regulator ADAE revealed this year that the network of politicians and journalists being monitored by the state spy service was growing.
Panagiotis Kontoleon, the former head of Greece’s EYP intelligence agency, was one of a handful of senior officials who resigned over the incident.
