The Euros are over, the Copa America is over, there are a few games left in the Olympics, but Chelsea are of course strict about which players can play in those games, and Enzo Fernandez was denied a request to play in that game. And I was happy about that.
Enzo lifted the Copa America trophy for Argentina, giving his side another major winner’s medal and another great achievement for a player who has been performing so well in the competition.
Enzo won the Copa America and the World Cup for his country at just 23 years old. It’s truly incredible.
But now he must turn his attention back to domestic football and winning trophies with Chelsea. It’s a big season ahead for Enzo.
Chelsea invested a huge amount of money in Enzo and showed their belief and trust that he would become a big player for the club. Like many here, I was ecstatic when Enzo finally crossed the line and joined Chelsea in the January 2023 transfer window. The confirmation that Enzo would join Chelsea is still the most commented article this site has ever produced (in 4 years). That’s all.
But Enzo has not yet fully developed for Chelsea, and there are several reasons for this: he has played out of position, largely due to the wrong profile, has played through injuries, has played in teams that have attempted a transition but have struggled, and has also played under different managers.
We all know what Chelsea have been like over the last few seasons. It hasn’t been good. Enzo is a natural winner, a South American fighter. He just wants to fight and win. He hasn’t been able to do that at Chelsea lately.
But Enzo now has to step up like his teammates and everyone else at the club. The fans need to see a complete improvement this season, and we need to see an improvement from Enzo. He has to step up, and I know he will. I really believe he will.
Enzo (Maresca) I think Enzo could be something special. I think Maresca’s style of football would suit Enzo well. I think so. I hope Maresca can convince the manager and get the best out of Enzo. But I won’t go into next season blindly, I’ll see how this situation unfolds.
But I know the quality that Enzo has and what he can do. We saw it in Argentina, we saw it at Chelsea in small pockets. He will have some form and consistency, but his teammates will have to do the same.
As I said, it’s a big season for Enzo and Chelsea as a whole. Now we need to improve. Progress needs to be made.
