While in power, PiS severely restricted freedom of the press, including placing public broadcasters under strict political control.
Kaczynski told Malecka-Trzaskosi in a group of journalists: “This is not for children. So, go away.”
“I have freedom of speech,” Małecka-Trzaskoś replied.
“But freedom of the press is not for kids,” Kaczynski said. “Seriously, back off.”
Małecka-Trzaskoś, who started her TikTok channel in February, did what a parliamentary correspondent should do: interview politicians. She even interviewed Tusk, and her videos reached 20,000 to 30,000 people.
“I was a little offended. I asked why she thinks so, why freedom of speech is not for children,” Małecka-Trzaskoś told Polish news portal Onet. “For me, freedom of speech is the most important thing.”
The PiS party, which ruled the country for eight years until its election defeat in October last year, tightened Poland’s abortion laws to the point of almost completely banning them in 2020. Poland’s new government, led by Tusk, has sought to move the country’s laws in a more liberal direction.
