DHL Stormers rugby director John Dobson says the Springboks are well placed to challenge for a third consecutive World Cup title in South Africa in 2027.
After leading the Foxes to victory in 2019, the talismanic Siya Kolisi will become only the second player to successfully defend the Webb Ellis Cup in November 2023.
Lassie Erasmus’s side, currently ranked number one in the world Test rankings, can secure a series sweep when they take on second-placed Ireland at Kings Park on Saturday.
Talking about the latest episode Get off the ballOn his morning show, Dobson covered the state of South African rugby, highlighting the world champions’ succession plans.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen South African rugby in a better position in my life. We’ve won two titles in a row and we’re not going to fall off a cliff in 2027,” he said.

“(Steven) Kitthoff will be a success, (Gerhard) Stinekamp is a young loosehead… There are so many crazy young second-rowers and number eights wherever you go… We won’t fall off a cliff.
“Willie Le Roux is old and plays full-back and plays well, but Damien Willemse is 26 and is really our number one full-back and has already won two World Cups. Andre Esterhuizen can replace (Damian) De Allende (inside centre).
“If I were the rest of the world, I don’t think I would have ever seen South Africa in this situation. It’s scary, but it’s good for us.
“It seems like we have a succession plan… nobody’s ever won three in a row, and that’s kind of our obsession.
“I’m not being belligerent because I’m the first one to point out all the things we’ve done wrong, but I think we’re in a really strong position at the moment and with Ireland in second place I think there’s a risk that the gap could widen further.”
