Josh Gibson was a popular young athlete in Pittsburgh, whose family moved here from Buena Vista, Virginia, when he was 12. He was a catcher for a black amateur team called Gimbels AC. He later played for a semi-pro team called the Crawford Colored Giants. But the local team he wanted to play for, the famous Homestead Grays, didn’t have a spot for him. They had a catcher named Buck Ewing.
