Ahead of his debut headline show in Oslo Hackney on Thursday night, few artists have garnered as much attention as CATTY.
It’s a bold statement to say that celebrities like Dua Lipa and Sam Smith have stopped by this 400-seat venue on their way to stardom, but it feels true nonetheless.
Having sold out at their first venue, The Grace, and then upgraded to sell out again at Oslo Hackney, CATTY tickets have been a hit in London. For those who get their hands on a ticket, the rising star will be belting out dark pop hits for a delicious hour.
The singer enters the stage with the opening tones of ‘Bella Dona’, she taps the air three times and turns her back to the audience. As she turns, she greets the audience with a bright smile. That smile is soon shaken off and looks mean and arrogant as the chorus of her debut single falls into a loud welcome.
One Thursday night, the songwriter sneaks in a moment of dizzying excitement. “What the fuck?” is the first word she utters as a greeting.
It may be CATTY’s first headline set, but Hackney fans act like they’ve seen the singer a million times. The “You Made It” sign is high on ‘Healing Out of Spite’, one of the most underrated pop songs of 2024. CATTY swallows a lump in his throat at first, but by the end of the track, he’s on his knees and headbanging in front of the guitarist.
At other moments, notably on “Deep End” and “I Wish Gave You Hell,” the singer’s audience even repeats the lyrics back to her from the beginning.
The highlight of the night is CATTY donning a pink cowboy hat for the wonderfully sassy ‘I Don’t Miss You (I Just Miss Your Mum)’ and singing a lovely paean to her native Wales on ‘Homesick’. There’s also time for a full Stevie Nicks cover before cheering on the superstars in Hyde Park this summer.
CATTY close out the night with their final hit, ‘I Dated A Monster’ is almost cinematic on stage live, and just when you think the show can’t get any better, they get a wild ride with their final song, ‘Maybe All The Rumours Are True’.
It’s impossible not to be captivated by CATTY’s headline debut. Dua Lipa and Sam Smith have big ambitions… but the secret to pop success is clearly there.
