Rahul Dravid after India wins the 2024 T20 World Cup final©AFP
As Rahul Dravid’s tenure expires after the 2024 T20 World Cup, a search is underway to find the next coach of the Indian cricket team. Dravid performed brilliantly as the Rohit Sharma-led team won the title after defeating South Africa. Normal crash. While Gautam Gambhir emerged as the frontrunner for the position along with WV Raman, fans and pundits wondered why Dravid did not apply for the position again. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah gave reasons for Dravid’s decision and said the board did not want to ‘force’ the issue.
“He said he wanted to quit because of family commitments and we respect his decision. I didn’t want to force him to extend it,” Shah told reporters in Barbados.
Shah also praised Dravid for his contribution to Indian cricket, first as a cricketer and then as the administrator and head coach of the Indian cricket team.
“Rahul bhai has served Indian cricket for the past five and a half years. He served as the director of the National Cricket Academy for three years and then the head coach of the Indian team for the last two-and-a-half years,” Shah said.
“Rahul Dravid’s role is as important as Rohit Sharma’s in winning this T20 World Cup. He has led the team to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and he is the one who does not want to leave because he wants to finish the job,” he said.
Shah also confirmed that a new coach will be appointed for India’s upcoming season.
“The appointment of the coach and selector will be done soon. The CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and once they reach Mumbai, we will follow whatever decision they make. VVS Laxman will go to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join us for the Sri Lanka series,” Shah was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
