The original method was devised by British statisticians Duckworth and Tony Lewis, and was first used in international cricket in 1997, before being officially adopted by the ICC in 2001 as the standard for setting modified targets in shortened matches. It was renamed the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after Duckworth and Lewis retired in 2014 and the system was modified by Australian statistician Steven Stern.
Duckworth was a consultant statistician at the ICC until 2014.
“Frank was a leading statistician who was respected by his peers and the wider cricketing community. The DLS method he co-developed has stood the test of time and we have continued to use it in international cricket more than 20 years after its inception. Wasim Khan, ICC’s Chief Executive Officer for Cricket Operations, said in a press statement: “Frank’s contribution to the game was immense and the world of cricket is poorer for his passing. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
