Wales hooker Sam Parry has left the squad abruptly after rumors spread that he felt ‘disrespected’ by manager Warren Gatland. Despite being included in the initial squad earlier this month, Parry was not selected for the upcoming match against South Africa on Saturday.
According to a report in The Daily Mail, the 32-year-old believed he was a full member of the Gatland team and in contention for a summer tour to Australia. He said he was surprised, however, when he found out he had been included to help the team prepare for the tour.
According to the same report, Parry, who has earned seven caps for Wales, was given less kit than his team-mates at the first summer meeting. It is also claimed that other hooker options were discussed in team meetings, with Parry being mentioned later.
Parry reportedly left the team earlier this week. The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has been contacted for comment.
Wales are expected to be without a key hooker for the tour with Elliot Dee injured. Dewi Lake and Evan Lloyd join the squad along with rookie Efan Daniel.
Parry’s departure is one of several changes this week, with Keelan Giles and Jac Morgan also exiting. Henry Thomas will miss at least the South Africa game through injury, while Corey Hill and Dylan Lewis are also facing fitness issues.
Wales are scheduled to play South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday at 2pm.
