Watch out, Wordle and Connections, here comes the Strands. Like these two games, Strands is a New York Times online word game. Strands is currently in beta, so it doesn’t yet appear in the New York Times’ gaming app. You should get into the game right away. It’s in beta so it’s still being tested so improvements may be made before it’s fully released. This story explains the rules of Strands in detail.
Strands reminds me of those old school Word Find books sold at the checkout counter of every grocery store. A grid of letters is provided, but unlike a word search book, there is no list of words. This is what makes the game both fun and frustrating.
And if you’re reading this, you probably need help with the June 23 Strands puzzle. WARNING: Scroll too far, too fast or you’ll see spoilers.

But if this doesn’t help, here’s a clue: I want my baby back, baby.
Clue words that can unlock in-game hints
Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the theme of the puzzle. If you get stuck, look for possible words. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands reveals one of its theme words. Here are the words I used to get the hint: However, any word with four or more letters that you find will work.
CHAIR, TABS, SEER, CHEER, TABS, HAIRS, CHEERS, HAIR, BATON, HERE, CREE, SLAIN, CHECK, CHECKER, RISK
Answer to today’s Strands puzzle
This answer is related to the topic. The goal of the puzzle is to find everything, including the theme word, the spangram, that runs from one side of the puzzle to the other. Once you get all the letters (I originally thought it was always 8, but I’ve learned that the numbers can vary), all the letters on the board are used. Here’s the non-Spanggram answer:
Subway, Sonic, Chili’s, Outback, Sizzler, Checker
Today’s Strand Spanggram
Today’s Strands spangram is Chain link. To explain the spelling, start with C, which is three letters down on the far left.
How to Play NYT Strands
1. Use today’s topic to find words related to that topic. Do you see one? Drag or click the letters in order. To submit your guess, double-click on the last letter. When it finds the topic word, it turns blue and stays that way.
2. Other words you find are considered hint words that provide clues to the topic word. If you find three hint words (each of which must have at least four letters), the game will reward you by displaying the theme word. But if you can’t decipher it, find three more hint words and the game will highlight the letters of the topic word in order.
3. Go hunting spangram, special topic words that span the entire puzzle. However, it can also flow horizontally or from top to bottom. Summarize the topic of the puzzle.
4. When you’re done, you’ve used all the letters on the board in your theme word or spangram. Topic words fill the entire board and do not overlap.
