Since we last wrote Kaser Focus, Ubisoft has wrapped up Summer Game Fest with a major showcase. But on June 11th, the last straggler appeared. It was a showcase for Dragon Age: The Veilguard from Electronic Arts and Bioware. In addition to the teaser trailer we saw last week, there was also a lengthy gameplay showcase showcasing one of the game’s first missions. Reactions from Dragon Age fans were decidedly mixed, with the overwhelming majority being negative. And I’m sincerely trying to understand why.
To be clear, I’m not one to think gamers should be grateful for the scraps publishers throw at their favorite series. If BioWare makes us wait 10 years and then ruins Dragon Age 4, I will scream louder than anyone. I’m not sure what it is about the teaser trailer that seems to have rubbed everyone the wrong way. Mike Minotti described it as “a little more Fortnite than Dragon Age,” and I didn’t really feel the same way. Although brighter and more colorful than previous games, the art design and atmosphere of every Dragon Age game has been different from its predecessor.
Based on the gameplay shown, I choose to be optimistic that Veilguard will perform at the best of Bioware games. You have to make sacrifices. Looking at the ending of the gameplay demo, I suspect Bioware knows what methods to use to make this as emotionally crushing as possible. The only real problem I have with Veilguard so far is that it has an awkward and unnecessary “The” in the title. Go, knight!
On a personal note, I’m planning on taking advantage of Steam Next Fest to try out a bunch of new games. There weren’t many shadow drops for me to enjoy during Summer Game Fest, but there were four games released from Wholesome Games Direct at the time of the showcase. With not too many games coming out right now, it’s time to play demos of new games or go back and finish old ones.
