Weather may play a big role in the T20 World Cup 2024 to be held in Florida over the next few days. The competition has three Group A matches scheduled over the next three days. The tropical disturbance caused a rare flash flooding emergency across much of South Florida, including Broward County, where the race site, Lauderhill, is located.
The first World Cup match to be played at the stadium, Nepal v Sri Lanka, has been canceled and three further matches – USA v Ireland, Canada v India and Ireland v Pakistan – could also be affected, with heavy rain expected throughout.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a flood watch remains in effect for all of South Florida until Friday evening. The game is scheduled to take place at 10:30 a.m. local time.
NWS told
India clinched a Super Eight spot with a win over the United States on Wednesday, but the remaining teams in Group A, including the United States, Canada, Ireland and Pakistan, will face stiff competition for the other spots.
As things stand, all four teams can still mathematically qualify.
Pakistan, a 2022 T20 World Cup finalist, has won just one of its three matches so far, but can advance to the next round if they beat Ireland and the United States lose. If either of them is eliminated, the United States with two wins will qualify. Canada (3 wins, 1 win) and Ireland (2 wins, 1 draw) are ranked lower.
The defeat on June 11 also affected Group D, with Sri Lanka and Nepal at risk of elimination.
A minimum of five overs are required to constitute a match and there are no reserve days for group stage matches. There are reserve days for the first semi-final and final, but not the second semi-final. This is because there is a one-day gap between that match and the final.
