Earlier this month, Giancarlo Esposito couldn’t help but let his fans at CCXP Mexico know that he’s finally been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, Esposito declined to share details about his character or where he would appear. But he said it will happen “sooner than you think.” And he was right. Because the project is currently filming and is scheduled to release early next year.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Esposito has been added to the cast of Captain America: The Brave New World, which will be Marvel’s first film in 2025. The secrecy surrounding Esposito’s character is so tight that his role is reportedly listed as ‘undisclosed’ on Call. Sheet. But THR is reporting that Esposito is playing a “rogue role.”
Esposito relaunched his career after playing Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, a role he reprized in the sequel series Better Call Saul. Since then, Esposito has played villains in The Mandalorian and Revolution and a morally ambivalent character in Prime Video’s The Boys.
During his appearance at CCXP Mexico, Esposito dropped another hint that his MCU character will be “original, new and fresh.” This suggests that he is playing a villain who has never appeared in a Marvel film before. But with so many comic book villains to choose from, it’s hard to narrow down the possibilities.
Brave New World reshoots will take place over 22 days in Atlanta, with extended action scenes for Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. Marvel plans to release Captain America: Brave New World on February 14, 2025.
