Agar, who was named in Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign, is expected to join the squad after the tournament and will replace Raza when he plays for Zimbabwe in the series against India.
“I’m excited to join the Steelbacks in the Blast this year,” said Agar. “There’s a really exciting mix of players in the squad and I hope that when I join we’ll be in a really strong position in the table.”
Agar, 30, was part of Australia’s winning team in the 2021 T20 World Cup and is also a Big Bash League winner with Perth Scorchers.
He has taken 48 wickets in Australia’s 47 T20Is, with his best figures of 6 for 30 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2021.
Northamptonshire manager John Sadler said: “Ashton is an outstanding player with a real ability to change games and win games.” “He has a winning mindset, has played at the highest level and we are delighted to bring someone of his caliber to the club.”
“Once he joins us, I hope he can perform well and give us a win.”
Agar’s first game is scheduled for July 5 and his last game away to Durham on July 14, at which point Raza will return for the final two group games.
“We got a really close replacement from Ashton, which is a great job, so we’re happy with the work we’ve done.
“Obviously the Zimbabwe series was announced after we had signed Sikandar, which is a shame, but we still have him for the first eight games and we have him for the last two and we are very excited about that.”
