Chelsea have reportedly “turned away” Kieran McKenna amid a clear preference to join Manchester United ahead of another Premier League club.
McKenna is understood to be a key target if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS decide to sack Erik ten Hag.
Despite a brilliant 2-1 win over Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final, Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.
The Dutchman won widespread praise for his near-perfect game plan and tactics, which saw him dominate Pep Guardiola at Wembley.
A final assessment on whether Ten Hag will take over as Manchester United manager will be made following the season review next week.
In addition to Manchester United, Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion are known to be targeting McKenna. Both clubs need new managers after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi.
Chelsea have already approached McKenna’s representative to explore the possibility of him taking the hot seat at Stamford Bridge, but his desire remains to acquire Ten Hag and lead United into a new era under Ratcliffe and INEOS.
The 38-year-old is said to be confident about his prospects joining United.
According to a bit of an update provided by TWTD, Chelsea have decided to turn their attention elsewhere amid the belief that McKenna is keen on taking the reins at Old Trafford.
“TWTD understands Chelsea’s interest in signing Kieran McKenna as manager to replace Mauricio Pochettino has waned.”
“Mckenna is understood to be under serious consideration, but former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is now emerging as a front-runner for the job, along with Leicester’s Enzo Maresca, who was initially their first choice. He remains a strong bet.”
“McKenna will certainly run for the United job if Ten Hag is sacked. But a quick conclusion is unlikely in such circumstances. “The Seagulls remain very interested in making McKenna the successor to De Zerbi, who left by mutual consent at the end of the season, but we understand they will not wait too long before moving on to other targets.”
McKenna’s contract with the Tractor Boys runs until the summer of 2027, meaning United will have to pay compensation to the newly promoted club to part ways with their manager.
