Editor’s note: The 2024 RBR50 Robotics Innovation Awards were announced on April 9. RBR50 has been around for the past 12 years and the first RBR50 Gala was held at the Robotics Summit & Expo in Boston. Robot Report will highlight each RBR50 winner throughout the year.
Capra Robotics has launched Capra Hircus, an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) designed to easily navigate challenging terrain thanks to its patented kinematic model and four-wheeled chassis. These robots can carry different types of loads while moving over rough and uneven surfaces.
The Hircus AMR has the unique ability to navigate both indoors and outdoors using a variety of sensors to maintain its course. The system uses cameras for obstacle detection and avoidance.
Danish window manufacturer VELUX was challenged with transporting payloads and materials weighing up to 500 kg (1,102.3 lb.) within its manufacturing facility in Skjern, Denmark. The company sought an integrated system to solve this problem.
Capra Hircus, combined with a detachable cart from partner ROEQ, proved to be the best fit for VELUX’s requirements. Capra AMR has been integrated into the current operation, with tasks from the central management system being transferred to the robot via Capra Fleet Manager using the standardized VDA5050 interface.
Workers can prepare raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods on carts, place them in queues, and then schedule robots to pick and move them between manufacturing areas.
The movement process is fully automated, as the robot automatically controls gates and doors along the way, allowing access to the outside world, and returns indoors once it reaches its destination.
VELUX said there is tremendous potential in bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor transport. He added that integrated gate control, automated pick-up and drop-off, and wireless charging are among the reasons why Hircus is the obvious solution to meet their requirements.
