Japanese multinational video game company Nintendo announced that it has acquired Shiver Entertainment, a popular video game studio previously owned by Embracer Group and known for porting its games to various platforms.
This news comes after Nintendo publicly announced the acquisition through an official press release on May 21, 2024, revealing that it had acquired Shiver Entertainment from Embracer Group for an undisclosed purchase amount. Embracer Group owns Gearbox Entertainment, THQ Nordic, and many more video game development studios. Nintendo announced, “We will acquire 100% of Shiver’s issued shares and make it a wholly-owned subsidiary.”
Shiver has previously worked with Nintendo, “working with publishers and developers on commissions to develop large-scale titles.” The studio’s most recent efforts were Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1, which Shiver ported to the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s acquisition of Shiver will only further solidify its future success in video game development.
Nintendo “aims to secure a high level of resources for porting and development of software titles.” With Nintendo’s upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, reportedly set to release next year, the company appears to be planning a future where more games will be playable on its platform. However, Nintendo has stated that there will be no changes going forward. “After (Shiver) becomes part of the Nintendo group, the studio’s focus will remain the same, continuing its commission to port and develop software for multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.”
Despite this significant acquisition, Nintendo said it will have only a minor impact on its financial results for this fiscal year. It also said the acquisition “will be completed pending the satisfaction of all relevant customary closing conditions.” Nintendo seems to have a lot of plans for the next few years, and gamers might be pretty excited about them.
