Police in the British capital have detained 90 people and left three people stabbed, some seriously, on the first day of an Afro-Caribbean cultural carnival in London’s Notting Hill district.
“Hundreds of thousands of people came to Notting Hill to enjoy a fantastic celebration. Unfortunately, a small number of people committed crimes and became violent,” said Metropolitan Police.
According to police, the condition of a 32-year-old woman, one of the three people attacked with a bladed weapon, is the most concerning. She is in hospital and is in critical condition. A 24-year-old and a 29-year-old man were also injured.

A total of 7,000 police officers have been deployed to ensure security, and authorities have been given greater powers to search for suspicious persons. The second and final day of the carnival takes place on Monday.
The traditional Notting Hill Carnival in north-west London has been held since 1964. The largest street festival in Europe, it attracts over a million Britons and tourists each year. During the London Carnival, there is a sharp increase in violence and crime, particularly knife crime and crimes related to illegal drug dealing.
