Electric cargo bikes are available in two configurations: The first are front loader bikes, also known as bakfiets or Long Johns, which suspend a cargo box between the rider and the front wheel. Other layouts are midtail or longtail, which extend the rear end of the bike to accommodate more bodywork and equipment.
Both shapes have pros and cons. I have found that the larger the rider, the more likely he or she is to want a front loader bike. In addition to transporting kids, this bike can also be used as a large storage bin for yard equipment, tools, and more. However, you will need a garage or storage space and a very good, reliable locking system. If you have to negotiate curbs or rough terrain, it becomes harder to steer and much heavier. It doesn’t feel particularly stable at slow speeds.
If you’re a smaller or lighter person, you might prefer a midtail or longtail that handles like a regular bike. However, some people find it uneasy to drop it as the weight hangs over the rear end and top. I own Long Tail. I prefer mobility, but having everything strapped to shelves or panniers can be a hassle. If possible, we recommend making an appointment at your local bike shop and trying out several models.
