New York City FC Press Release
New York City FC’s La Canchita Street Soccer Tournament took place earlier this month on Saturday, November 2 at the Astoria Playground. Organized and hosted by City in the Community, a non-profit foundation proudly supported by New York City FC, this year’s event marks La Canchita’s first event in the club’s future borough of Queens.
MetroPlusHealth served as the presenting partner for the annual event, held at one of the 54 mini-stadiums that New York City FC helped build across the five boroughs. This year, La Canchita debuted a soccer program to encourage families to play together, celebrate local diversity, and improve the overall physical and mental health of the community.
“We are proud to reopen La Canchita this year and are grateful to our partners at MetroPlusHealth who helped make it possible,” said Bailee Eaglin, senior manager of community development for the City in the Community. “La Canchita is a wonderful event that celebrates community and diversity through the love of soccer, and bringing it to Queens for the first time was very special.”
“We are very excited to be a part of La Canchita,” said Elkin Cabas, Director of Experiential Marketing at MetroPlusHealth. “Our partnership with NYCFC and City in the Community has allowed us to celebrate soccer and diversity in Queens, making it a memorable experience for everyone. These events demonstrate how sports and medicine come together to create lasting, positive outcomes. It really highlights what can be done.”
La Canchita is held annually for New York City youth ages 15 to 17. To learn more about City in the Community and its free soccer program, visit newyorkcityfc.com/community.
