Here are five players who could make a name for themselves on the summer tour over the next few months.
pin smith
The Northampton Saints fly-half has been given a great opportunity to show England coaches what he can do this summer. George Ford is out due to injury and Marcus Smith is likely to start every game. But if Fin Smith can get on the pitch, he might be able to show why he should be the second man, or even the first man.
Smith has just won a premiership with Saints and has been a key part of the campaign. If he carries his league form to the international stage, he will face trouble for selection Steve Borthwick.
Edwill van der Merwe
South African winger Edwill van der Merwe is already making headlines this summer. His Springboks debut against Wales earned him the Player of the Match award and earned him praise from fans and media alike.
He will have the same impact if he is trusted to start against other opposition. The 28-year-old joined South Africa late in the season but has slotted into their star-studded line-up as if he had a lot of caps.
Regan Grace
Regan Grace may have been a surprise addition to Warren Gatland’s squad this summer, but it was less of a shock to those who have watched him play. Grace, who scored 88 tries in 141 games for St Helen’s, impressed Bath coaches as he returned from injury on a permanent contract.
He will be looking to show what he can do on the rugby union international stage after already capping his career for Wales in rugby league.
Josh Hathaway
Josh Hathaway is another rising star who could attract attention in the Wales team. Hathaway shone for Gloucester in the second half of the 2023/24 season and caught the eye of Warren Gatland.
Hathaway was unable to play at Twickenham because the Springboks were out of the international break, but he could earn his first cap in another game this summer.
Sam Prendergast
The young Irishman has received a lot of hype from those who watch him play, and for good reason. He has a lot of potential with his exciting play and could break into the Ireland team this summer.
Who better to showcase his skills than the reigning World Cup champion?
