Originally, the characters of Lucille and Vivian were both supposed to be divorced, but they decided to make Lucille’s character a widow instead. (Because the network feared that audiences wouldn’t accept a divorced Lucy, even though she was actually divorced).
Vivian also insisted on being called “Vivian” on the show because she was sick of people calling her “Ethel” in real life.
