So far, both Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge have had seasons that transcend their time.
In his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani has made every penny of his 10-year, $700 million contract worth it. As of August 25, he ranks second in the league in home runs (41), fourth in RBIs (94) and eighth in hits (148).
He recently became the sixth member of the 40/40 Club.
At the start of the season, Ohtani was projected as a +950 chance of winning the NL MVP, probably because he won’t pitch this season, but since then, his dominance at the plate has improved his odds significantly.
Currently, Ohtani is an overwhelming favorite at -2300 to win the title at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Shohei Ohtani hits his 40th home run of the season, hitting a walk-off grand slam
Surprisingly, Judge may be having an even better season next season. Show time.
As of August 25, the Yankees’ slugger leads the league in home runs (51) and RBIs (122) and is second in batting average (.333).
With two more homers on Sunday, Judge is on track for 63 homers, which would be his third season with 50 or more, joining Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez as the only players to have done so.
That also broke his existing AL record of 62 points.
Judge was a -3000 favorite to win AL MVP on FanDuel on the morning of August 25. After hitting home runs No. 50 and No. 51, the AL MVP odds on FanDuel have dropped.
Ohtani and Judge’s performances have been so impressive that DraftKings Sportsbook has “Ohtani vs. Field” and “Judge vs. Field” odds for MVP in the NL and AL, respectively.
Let’s look at the odds as of August 25th.
Shohei Ohtani vs. other players:
Shohei Ohtani: -1400 ($10 bet, total win $10.71)
Other Players: +500 (If you bet $10, you win $60 total)
Aaron Judge vs. other players:
Aaron Judge: -3000 (bet $10 and win $10.33)
Other Players: +1000 (If you bet $10, you win $110 total)
Aaron Judge hits 50th home run of the season
The point is that Judge was -2000 in the field on Sunday morning, but those two home runs further reduced his odds, dropping him to -3000.
FanDuel Sportsbook is also capitalizing on this historic season by offering some interesting prop bets that give each team the odds to win the Triple Crown.
The Triple Crown (when a hitter leads his league in average, home runs, and RBI) has been achieved only 18 times in MLB history. The only time both leagues had Triple Crown winners was in 1933.
Let’s look at the odds as of August 25th.
Will Aaron Judge Win the 2024 American League Triple Crown?
Example: +520 (if you bet $10, you win $62)
No: -900 (if you bet $10 you win $11.11)
Will Shohei Ohtani Win the 2024 NL Triple Crown?
Example: +1000 (if you bet $10, you win $110)
No: -3000 (if you bet $10 you win $10.33)
Before Sunday’s game, Judge was +600 to win the Triple Crown at FanDuel. He has since moved to +520. As mentioned earlier, he currently leads all of baseball in home runs and RBIs. He is second in the AL in average.
In the National League, Ohtani currently ranks first in home runs and RBIs, and fourth in batting average.
Can these two continue to rewrite the record?
