A top five pick would start on his team, right?
That may not be the case in New England this season.
The Patriots will be entering their fifth season since Tom Brady left the franchise, and the second time they will be starting over with a quarterback they drafted. They selected Mac Jones 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, and he was a starter for most of three seasons in New England before being traded to Jacksonville this offseason.
Now enter Drake Maye.
New England selected May, who spent three years at North Carolina, with the third pick in this year’s draft.
But is he ready to shine on the biggest stage?
Let’s check out the odds for Jones to start for the Patriots next season with FanDuel Sportsbook as of June 2nd.
Patriots starting QB for Week 1
Jacoby Brissett, -350 (bet $10 to win $12.86 total)
Drake Maye, +255 (bet $10 to win $35.50 total)
Not only will veteran Brissett be a starter in New England next season; many It’s my favorite thing to start with.
Brissett, 31, enters his ninth professional season after spending his rookie season in New England, four seasons in Indianapolis and the past three seasons with Miami, Cleveland and Washington.
As a starting pitcher, he is 18-30 throughout his career and has a passing percentage of 85.3.
Despite Maye’s pedigree entering the league, there is precedent for a player of his draft status to start a season on the bench.
And all you have to do is head back to the 2021 NFL Draft.
That year, Jacksonville selected Trevor Lawrence with the first pick, the New York Jets selected Zach Wilson with the second pick, and both signal callers started right away.
With the third pick, San Francisco selected Trey Lance, who made just two starts in his rookie season. The starting pitcher for the remaining 15 games was veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
Would the case of Maye in New England be similar?
Drew Bledsoe’s advice for Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye
As for other Maye betting props, on FanDuel he is +2000 (tied for 6th on the odds boards) to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and leads all rookies in passing yards (5th on the odds boards) at +1100.
His over/under passing yards total is set at 2,650.5.
The Patriots’ over/under winning percentage this season is set at 4.5 wins, the lowest in the NFL.
In a recent episode of the “All Facts No Brakes With Keyshawn Johnson” podcast, former Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe gave his thoughts on Maye ahead of his first NFL season and said Maye will have a leg up thanks to his current offensive coordinator. Former longtime backup QB Alex Van Pelt.
“I actually talked to Alex a little bit about (Maye), and what Alex said is that there’s a ton of ability there, but he’s just kind of unmolded clay. That’s why I think he has a huge advantage because Alex Van Pelt is my backup quarterback in Buffalo… Alex is one of the guys I play with and will coach when he’s done.
“…I think Drake is in a very advantageous situation thanks to Alex.”
