With the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction approaching, India captain Rohit Sharma’s future at Mumbai Indians (MI) is uncertain. Rohit was removed as MI’s captain last season, handing over leadership duties to Hardik Pandya, who was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT). All 10 IPL teams can retain up to six players ahead of the auction. However, it is unclear whether MI will retain Rohit or whether the six-time IPL winner will feature in the auction for the first time in 13 years.
According to recent reports, several franchises are interested in Rohit joining, including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
In a recent conversation with Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, a fan expressed excitement over the possibility of Virat Kohli and Rohit being in the same team.
As per the wishes of fans, Ashwin said that RCB should secure at least Rs 20 crore for Rohit from the auction table.
“If you want to select Rohit Sharma, you have to keep $2 billion. (To join Rohit Sharma, you need to get 2 billion dollars yourself),” Ashwin said during a discussion on his YouTube channel.
MI traded Hardik from GT ahead of IPL 2024. However, the decision to sack Rohit as captain was not welcomed by the fans. In the end, MI ranked last in the 10-team point rankings.
With the BCCI allowing a maximum of six players including Right-To-Match, we expect some difficult decisions to be made in the coming months.
It is at the discretion of the franchisee to choose the combination of retention and RTM. Each of the 6 retained/RTMs can have up to 5 restricted players (Indian and International) and up to 2 unrestricted players.
Rohit, who joined MI ahead of IPL 2011, led the franchise to five IPL titles.
