Like the setting sun, 2024 has come to an end. And like the rising sun, 2025 has arrived too early, too bright, too cheerful. The good news is that, aside from squinting your eyes, complaining that it’s too bright, and wondering if you can get just five more minutes, 2025 is going to be a good year for video games. Well, hopefully we can clear up all the confusion in the industry this year.
2024 has been a pretty crazy year for the industry, too. Obviously, job losses continue to cast a shadow over everything, but it was also the year that Xbox games came to PlayStation, PlayStation-published games came to Switch, and everyone openly discussed working on portable consoles.
Anyway, with things going well, I was thinking about making a New Year’s resolution. I’m usually not interested in such things, but this time I had an interesting idea: a platinum trophy. I’ve been itching to get my hands on a few shiny trophies for the past six months, and that itch has only gotten worse as I’ve put together a guide to the most popular platinum trophies. Looking through my collection, I have seven mediocre platinums, several of which are mostly accidental. So I made a plan. 12 Platinum Trophies by 2026, which will almost triple my herd if I actually manage it.
The big question, of course, is which games exactly do you want to play for Platinum? There are so many good choices out there. I have some ground rules. I want to keep the experience no longer than about 30 hours purely so that I can do it for just one hour a day for an entire month. I’d like to invest more time, but I also want to reserve most of my time playing whatever title I’m reviewing. This will also help ensure that none of the Platinum I’m hoping to earn takes a long time, as I hate the idea of spending 100+ hours looking for collectibles.
It goes without saying that I might end up trying to achieve platinum for whatever game I’m reviewing. I never limit myself to 12 Platinum. I won’t complain if more happens.
And it goes without saying that you’ll also avoid the cheap trophy tattoos that adorn PlayStation stores. I don’t want to be able to get platinum just by hitting the start button and playing for 5 minutes.
I think I’ll chase trophies even in games I haven’t played. It’s tempting to refinish every game you’ve already come close to getting platinum for, and while you might do a few, I think it’s better to play games you’ve never experienced before. I have the least amount of games that I haven’t played in a very long time or haven’t played at all on other platforms.
Here are a few things I’m planning or considering:
- cunning 2
- cunning 3
- Ratchet and Clank (2016)
- Ratchets and Clanks: Size Matters
- toy story 2
- Legacy of Kane: Soul Reaver 1 & 2
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
- evil west
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
- Mafia: Definitive Edition
- Exciting Literature Club
- Ghostbusters: The Video Game
- tunic
- cannibal
- Immortal Aveum
- pacific drive
- Marvel Spider-Man Remastered
- Uncharted Series
- concrete genie
- alan wake 2
- destroy all humans
- destroy all humans 2
- monkey escape
- God of War 3 Remastered
As you can see, it’s a long list, mostly compiled from going through my game backlog. And with games coming out all the time, I’m sure there are a billion more you’d like to try. There are too many.
If you have any suggestions for Platinum that are reasonably short and fun, please let me know! Please leave a comment below with the coolest or most enjoyable Platinum you’ve achieved so far.
And finally, should I update you all on this little quest? Or should I just keep it on social media and post it here next year?
Speaking of social media, I’m on Bluesky right now! Please visit https://bsky.app/profile/badenronie.bsky.social.
PS I 3D printed each trophy as I got it to create a small physical collection.
