Apple has had great success with the iPad segment, announcing the new iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini tablets for 2024. However, one model is missing. This is the standard, basic iPad. Aside from being cheaper (an aggressive price cut to $349/£329 last year), Apple’s cheapest tablet is still exactly the same as the 10th-generation model released in 2022 and appears to be overdue for an update.
Fortunately, you don’t have to wait any longer for that to happen. From the expected release date to new features, design changes, and tech specs, here’s what we know so far about the 11th generation iPad of 2025.
When will the 11th generation iPad be released?
- The new 11th generation iPad will likely be released in March or April 2025.
Apple has had a steady release schedule for its cheapest iPads, launching new iPads alongside the latest iPhones at an annual September event. There was a slight adjustment in October due to the 10th generation reorganization in 2022… but the annual pattern was completely abandoned after that.
Here’s when the last five iPad models were released:
So when can we expect an update to the standard iPad? Most experts expect that to change when Apple unveils a new model alongside the fourth-generation iPhone SE at its spring event in March or April 2025. As you can see, there is precedent. The 6th generation iPad was also released in the spring.
Apple wants to release affordable tablets that support the Apple Intelligence AI platform as quickly as possible, and after all, two and a half years is a long time to wait since the last update. We don’t see the company holding off on the 11th generation iPad until summer or fall 2025.
How much does the 11th generation iPad cost?
- Pricing for the new 11th generation iPad will likely start from $449/£449.
This is Apple’s cheapest tablet, so price is important. Apple has long kept its entry-level iPad priced in the $300-$350 range, but that all changes in 2022. After the 10th generation redesign, Apple raised the price from $329 to $449. uk). At the time, we complained about this being out of reach for budget buyers, and that had a pretty big impact on our review.
But that wasn’t the end of the story. In May 2024, Apple reduced the price of the 10th generation iPad to $349/£349. They then reduced the price back to £329 in the UK. And we were happy to once again recommend this device to potential customers.
This is an indirect way of saying that we are less confident than usual in predicting the price of the 11th generation iPad. Has Apple learned its lesson about raising prices too high, and will it return to the budget prices of the past? Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely. Between the company’s recent push for higher margins and the significant increase in processing power we expect for this generation (discussed in the next section), it’s highly unlikely that the 11th-generation iPad will cost less than $400. Our guess is that it will cost $449/£449 at launch, with a price cut at a later date. And the 10th-generation model will remain in the lineup as a true budget option for those who don’t need Apple Intelligence.
What technical specifications and new features can we expect to see in the 11th generation iPad?
- The new 11th generation iPad features an A17 Pro chip, 8GB of RAM, and also supports Apple Intelligence.
Since the 10th generation iPad has received a major redesign, it is not expected that there will be any major external changes. However, there will be some notable upgrades under the hood of the 11th generation iPad.
Processor and RAM
The most obvious update to the 11th generation iPad would be the chipset. The current model runs on the A14 chipset, which debuted in 2020 with the fourth-generation iPad Air and iPhone 12, but is expected to jump to the A17 Pro with 8GB of RAM to run Apple Intelligence. That’s a significant increase in processing power (though it’ll likely rule out a sub-$400 price tag), and the 10th-generation iPad is currently the only Apple tablet that doesn’t support Apple Intelligence, so it’s important to get as many users as possible. On the platform.

As the display increased from 10.2 inches to 10.9 inches with the 10th generation reorganization, it is expected that there will be no change in screen size this time as well. The only possible change in this area is to use a laminated display. This allows the device to be slightly thinner and offer better clarity. It’ll also make the tablet feel better in use, as the non-laminated screen (used on the 10th-generation iPad, among other budget Apple tablets) tends to flex downward very slightly when pressed.

camera
The 10th generation iPad is Apple’s first tablet to change the front camera position from portrait mode to landscape mode, and since it already has a center stage, we don’t expect Apple to change the front camera. It’s possible that Apple will upgrade the rear camera slightly, but since the M2 iPad Air released in 2024 features the same 12MP wide camera, improvements will likely come in the form of a software update.

If there’s one area where simple upgrades can make people’s lives more convenient, it’s storage. The cheapest configuration of the 10th-generation iPad still comes with 64GB of storage, which isn’t enough for many customers. The rest of the range starts with a minimum of 128GB. As with the iPhone SE, Apple is expected to increase base storage on the entry-level tablet up to 128GB when the 11th-generation iPad launches, while also increasing the top model to 512GB.
- iPad (10th generation): 64GB, 256GB
- iPad (11th generation, expected): 128GB, 512GB
